2019 judges

This year we have once again attracted six distinguished judges, namely Bruce Burgess, FPSNZ, Ollie Dale, Rachel Jordan, Rachael Smith, Ian Walls, FPSNZ, and Kim Westerskov who will have the unenviable task of selecting the best images from the thousands of entries for acceptance into the salon.

Bruce Burgess, FPSNZ

Bruce has had a lifetime passion for photography whose philosophy is to adopt a personal style, portraying an artistic vision which not only communicates, but is also emotionally powerful.

Bruce is Fellow of the Photographic Society of NZ (FPSNZ); is current Chairman with 8 years on the PSNZ Honours Board; is a life member and Patron of the Henderson Photographic Society.

Bruce was invited in 2006 to join a team of 8 international photographers to capture the traditions and people in two Chinese provinces. This year, Bruce was invited to be a judge for the Adelaide International Audio-Visual Festival.

Rachael Smith

Hi, I’m Rachael.  I have a passion for discovery, travel, adventure, and capturing it all on camera.  I’ve lived in the USA and Asia and travelled through more than 30 countries. Photographically my interests lie in a wide range of techniques rather than one specific niche.  My images have won awards within New Zealand and Internationally.  I am an NZIPP Master of Photography and am currently studying a Master of Fine Arts within contemporary art.  Printing images is an integral part of my creative process, the excitement of seeing an image in print is something I never tire of.

Ian Walls, FPSNZ

When PSNZ reinvigorated its judge training program Ian was one of the first to complete the Accredited Judge qualification. He now regularly judges at club, regional and national level and is a member of the Judge Accreditation Panel.

“It has been a challenge for me to understand why I am drawn to photograph the things that I do, and to recognise what this says about me?

By nature, I am an optimist, I see the positive side of things first. Photography is all about seeing things that others may not see. Consequently, my viewpoint will be a positive one.

I make pictures that I enjoy. For me photography provides a means and a motive to become a better observer of the good, the beautiful and the interesting.

As a judge I strive to recognise the personal vision that the individual photographer brings to the work. I believe that that vision is critical while design and technical considerations are secondary.”

Kim Westerskov

Kim Westerskov is both an amateur photographer [because he loves it] and professional photographer [it’s how he pays the bills].

He has a Ph.D. In Marine Sciences from Otago University, but photographing nature - and writing about it - was his real calling.

He has written and photographed 18 books and won five First Prizes in the BBC “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” competition, the Olympics/Oscars of nature photography worldwide.

Much of his time over the last 10 years has been spent teaching and mentoring photographers through workshops at this Tauranga studio and mentoring photographers around New Zealand.
